Welcome to the e-age, Zille tells Cape pupils

Western Cape premier Helen Zille yesterday launched her government's ePortal system to help boost education in public schools. The launch was part of the "eLearning game changer" programme announced by Zille during her state of the province address in February.The website www.wcedeportal.co.za, which went live yesterday, offers information on subjects like maths and science.Pupils can search study guides and materials on the portal using different platforms. Material offered includes apps, videos, e-books and documents.There are also content and search options for teachers, parents, school managers and school governing board members.Content on the portal can be rated by pupils and teachers, so the most popular content shows at the top of search results.Users can also search the education department's policies on how schools should handle discipline, emotional and physical health issues, and bullying.Zille said her vision was that every teacher and pupil would have "instantaneous and real time and free internet access to digital learning."By the end of next year we want to have free, high-speed internet access for every school in the Western Cape and that is going to revolutionise education."Earlier this year, education MEC Debbie Schäfer said the province aimed to connect 1250 schools to high-speed broadband by next July as part of the programme.Zille said her government had already connected more than 275 schools and that the department was ahead of schedule in connecting the rest of the province's schools...
