SA trading vessel off to China

South Africa's first registered trading vessel is en route to China with 170000 tons of iron ore. The 300m bulk carrier, owned by Vuka Marine, a joint-venture company between South African firm Via Maritime Holdings and Japanese firm K-Line, is the first merchant vessel flying the country's flag to be registered on the ship's registry since 1985.The second vessel to be registered soon is the Cape Enterprise.More than 80% of goods that come to South Africa are transported by sea, yet until the registration of the vessel the country's ship register remained empty."This registration is among the intended outcomes of BRICS [Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa] engagement to increase trade and co-operation. We intend increasing the number of South African ships on the register," said Tseitsie Mokhele, CEO of the South African Maritime Safety Authority...
