Gauteng police said they have not yet charged anyone for the double murder at Rhodes Park in Kensington, Johannesburg, where two men were drowned and a woman raped.

"We haven't charged anyone yet in the case. Once someone has been charged, we will release the information," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Local newspaper Joburg East Express reported that a 24-year-old man was arrested in Yeoville in the early hours of Friday morning.

Yeoville police spokesperson Constable Thabo Malatji reportedly told the community newspaper the man would face two counts of murder and one of rape.

It has been nearly two weeks since the horrific attack on two couples, who were enjoying a picnic and then a stroll through the Johannesburg park when 12 men accosted them, tied up the two men and raped one of the women. The gang then drowned both men.

Sibongile Kela, the uncle of one of the murdered men told News24 he was relieved that someone might possibly be arrested.

"I did not know if the police would find someone. They told us they were going to the caretaker of the park to try and see if they can get footage," he said.

Kela said he would ask another relative to check with the local police station on whether there were any arrests.
