Varsity workers protest about working conditions

Just when South African universities seemed to have restored order after almost two weeks of demonstrations, workers at the Kingsway campus of the University of Johannesburg have started protesting about alleged unfair labour practices and other issues. Workers employed by private company Elite Cleaning Services are fuming because their employer allegedly sold the company to Servest Group without their consent - leaving the future of some workers unclear.

Just when South African universities seemed to have restored order after almost two weeks of demonstrations, workers at the Kingsway campus of the University of Johannesburg have started protesting about alleged unfair labour practices and other issues.

Workers employed by private company Elite Cleaning Services are fuming because their employer allegedly sold the company to Servest Group without their consent - leaving the future of some workers unclear.

This week workers downed tools and demanded the university not outsource but employ them on full-time contracts.

Yesterday workers protested outside Vice-chancellor Ihron Rensburg's office.

Rensburg did not show up.

Workers and students at the University of Cape Town and Wits went on strike to stop outsourcing of workers to private companies. Management agreed to abolish outsourcing.
