The death toll from a shoot-out near Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday has risen to seven.

Two police sources, who could not be named because they are not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the toll.

It was understood that a Special Task Force was deployed after information was received that a gang was on its way to effect a cash-in-transit heist.

When the task force encountered the gang, a shoot-out ensued.

At least seven members of the gang were killed. One was arrested and two vehicles and several firearms were recovered.

Two other vehicles apparently fled the scene with some gang members.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane was en route to the scene and would be able to provide more information later.
