"Black Widow" Thandi Maqubela, who is serving an 18-year sentence for killing her judge husband, is confident she will be home for Christmas. Maqubela applied for bail in the Cape Town High Court yesterday, pending her appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal. Her advocate, Thomas Tyler, said she was not a flight risk and had "reasonable prospects (of) success on appeal".Tyler said the cause of acting judge Patrick Maqubela's death could not be established, "despite a very thorough post-mortem examination".The high court sentenced Maqubela in March after she was found guilty of killing her husband at his Sea Point flat in 2009 and forging his signature on a will that declared her the sole beneficiary of his estate. Her legal hurdle is the fact that the Cape Town High Court refused her leave to appeal her fraud conviction, which could limit her chances of release on bail. She has to petition the SCA.The state opposed the bail application. The court will rule on the application on Friday...
