Van Rooyen 'bad for ANC in polls'
By appointing David van Rooyen as minister of co-operative governance and traditional affairs, President Jacob Zuma has damaged the ANC's election prospects for next year. This is the view of some ANC leaders following Zuma's announcement that Pravin Gordhan was to be moved from the department to return as head of the Finance Ministry. Van Rooyen, finance minister for a weekend, replaces Gordhan.The senior ANC members, who spoke to The Times anonymously, said Van Rooyen's tenure at co-operative governance and traditional affairs might be brief because party leaders believe he is not the right man for the job with next year's elections looming."It is important that we have the best people if we are to do well in the coming elections. Surely [Van Rooyen] is not the right man to deal with the elections."It is just one disaster that will have an impact on us. Removing him will give us space," said a party member.
