A vehicle carrying a father and his six children plunged down an embankment near Bazley Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, killing a 15-year-old girl, paramedics said on Sunday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the family had been travelling on the N2 when the car veered off the road around midnight on Saturday.

Describing the crash as "horrific", he said paramedics found the twisted frame of the overturned car down the embankment.

The teenager died due to extensive injuries. Her father and siblings, aged between nine and 11, were seriously injured.

"Paramedics and firemen had to clamber down the steep slope with all their equipment as the patients were still trapped in the wreckage."

Botha said officials "worked tirelessly" to bring the injured back up to the road where ambulances were parked. They were taken to a hospital in Port Shepstone.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
