Barely two weeks after handing himself over to correctional services to begin a 12-year sentence, abaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has so far spent four days in a private hospital.

Correctional Services said on Tuesday that the king was still under medical supervision at St Dominic’s Hospital in East London.

Spokesperson Manelisi Wolela could not divulge any information regarding the king’s health, after he was admitted to hospital following a hunger strike.

He was admitted to the hospital on Friday night after a five-day hunger strike.

Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, who went to visit the king on Saturday, said Dalindyebo had promised to start eating again.

Dalindyebo handed himself over at the Mthatha Correctional Centre in December after unsuccessfully trying several legal avenues to avoid jail.

He is serving a 12-year sentence for crimes meted out to some of his subjects in 1995 and 1996.
