Township-based businesses to get 30% of Gauteng’s procurement spend
The Gauteng Provincial Government will be giving 30% of its procurement spend to township-based businesses. This‚ the Department of Economic Development said on Friday‚ will see government departments having to “prioritise purchases of goods and services below R500 000 towards township economy”.For the procurement of goods and services above that threshold‚ “departments must identify commodities and projects where township suppliers can participate through sub-contracting‚ and joint ventures”.This is part of the Gauteng Township Economy Revitalisation Strategy‚ for which the “province has set an annual target of 12% for the financial year (2015/16) in respect of purchases from township enterprises”.The department also took the opportunity to tout the success of the “Qondisa Ishishini Lakho” (“Fix your Business”) campaign‚ launched in October last year‚ “which aims to assist all potential and current entrepreneurs to formalise their business and offer any business-related advice‚ financial and non-financial support”.Gauteng economic development MEC Lebogang Maile said that “once the process of registering township enterprises across different sectors of our economy is complete; there will be no excuse for any government department or agency to overlook township businesses in procurement processes”...
