Fan power 'can turn Chiefs' season around'
Former Kaizer Chiefs skipper Tefu Mashamaite says his previous side can bounce back and salvage their season, but the club's supporters have a huge role to play in ensuring this happens. Amakhosi, last season's league winners and MTN8 champions, are finding it tough under new coach Steve Komphela this campaign.Komphela's charges were beaten 1-0 by Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 final earlier in the season and again were second-best when they lost 3-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout final last month. However, Mashamaite knows all about Chiefs' struggles, having been part of the 2011-2012 Amakhosi team that finished empty-handed for the first time since 2002 but went on to win two league titles in the next three seasons under Stuart Baxter."They must keep supporting the team and creating a positive atmosphere for the players and the coach to regain the confidence," Mashamaite said from the US, where he is in camp with his Swedish club BK Hacken, the team he joined in August last year.Mashamaite has set his sights on his own goals and hopes to win the league title with Hacken this year after they finished seventh last year."It's been a good stay for me and the first four months last year really gave me an idea of what Sweden is like as a country."I played seven games of the last eight in the season and it felt good."We are back now for the new season and it is cold, but the focus is giving my best on the field. I want to challenge for league honours. We've made a few good signings with considerable experience and that shows that we are taking this year seriously," Mashamaite said. The 31-year-old Limpopo-born defender added that the strikers in Sweden concentrated more on finishing and that meant defenders had to pay extra attention."It would be unfair to compare them with PSL strikers, but the strikers there are more focused on finishing. You get a lot of box (strikers) who wait for the opportunity to just finish. In South Africa, depending on the team, you get strikers who sometimes have to carry the double load of creating space plus scoring," he said.Speaking of strikers, Mash-amaite's former Chiefs teammate Matthew Rusike has signed for one of Sweden's top clubs, Helsingborg, and the defender is looking forward to their battle when their sides meet in the campaign."I'm happy for Matthew. I think this is a perfect environment for him to grow as a striker." I remember when he signed for Halmstad. He showed signs of brilliance and I hope he continues with that at Helsingborg. Yeah, it will be interesting to come across him on the field," he concluded...
