"The vehicle allegedly caught alight due to sparks that were somehow created," ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said.

"After the woman jumped out, the driver brought the vehicle to a standstill and he and the other passengers got out and away from the then blazing vehicle."

A three-year-old, who was also in the vehicle had minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Two other adults were uninjured.

The critically injured woman was airlifted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Rossouw said the cause of the fire was not known.
