Close eye on fire near Koeberg

A large fire near the Koeberg nuclear power plant in Cape Town was being monitored by firefighters last night after burning out of control for two days.The fire was brought under control on Wednesday night with the help of Eskom and Nature Conservation personnel.Firefighters were "damping down" burnt areas to prevent flames from flaring up again, said City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith.The nuclear power plant was evacuated on Tuesday due to a smoke health hazard.On Wednesday the wind suddenly changed direction, causing more woes for the embattled firefighters as the fire flared up in untouched areas.Four helicopters, 21 firefighting vehicles, and 80 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire, which forced authorities to close the R27 highway said City of Cape Town fire and rescue services spokesman Theo Layne."We had lots of people from the community and Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch that came to supply food and resources to personnel," said Layne...
