Hoping to prompt debate on this question is Ivor Ichikowitz, philanthropist and chairman of the Ichikowitz Family Foundation.

The foundation has partnered with Constitution Hill for the 20th anniversary celebration of the constitution with an exhibition that he hopes will become part of the school syllabus.

The exhibition, titled "It's a Fine Line", is a collection of pencil drawings by artist Dean Simon that look at South Africa's past.

Ichikowitz said: "The art was designed to provoke dialogue; it's not just about young South Africans, but also older ones, who don't know much about the constitution. It's all about bringing the constitution back into the limelight and there's no better time than now, when it seems global chaos is the focal point."

Political figures such as Oliver Tambo, Albert Luthuli and Mathews Phosa are depicted in Simon's works.

The drawings will be complemented by archive film footage showing the prison cells at the Old Fort in Hillbrow.

Ichikowitz said the exhibition was designed as a multimedia opportunity to embrace history and remember the sacrifices made by our forefathers.

To coincide with the exhibition is the launch of #IamConstitution, a national campaign promoting the values and benefits of the constitution among all South Africans.

The exhibition is open to the public at the Old Fort, Constitution Hill, from tomorrow until April 30.
