Shops looted in Zandspruit residents demand access to electricity

The community of Zandspruit informal settlement‚ northwest Johannesburg‚ remained defiant on Thursday‚ saying they would continue with their strike over access to electricity.Chaos erupted in the area after illegal electricity connections were disconnected by power utility Eskom on Tuesday.PICS: Looters damage fuel station shop amid Zandspruit electricity protestResidents had been buying cables and connecting to the power supply from street poles and nearby electric power boxes.PICS: Rubber bullets used to disperse Zandspruit protestersElectric cables criss-cross the streets‚ posing a danger to their lives‚ especially when its raining. The cables can also be seen hanging from inside and outside the shacks in the area.Thursday was yet another day marred by violence‚ with the stoning of police and looting of shops. Last night‚ several cars were torched.The rain did not stop residents from burning tyres‚ tree trunks and rubbish. They also used rocks to block the roads.On Wednesday‚ rubber bullets were fired on the protesting residents. Police also used tear gas. A garage in the area was looted the night before and properties were damaged‚ including an ATM.Residents said they would not stop their protest action. While they knew that it was dangerous to illegally connect electricity‚ they said they had no choice.“The problem with electricity is that people who fall under Region C‚ who are supposed to be our leaders‚ do not live here with us‚” said a resident.“Our leaders know what is leading the people in this area to resort to illegal connections. People need electricity. Why are they not being given electricity?” he asked.Another resident said the informal settlement should have been electrified a long time ago but other areas were given first preference.“This [Zandspruit] is the first informal settlement. We have been living here since 1994‚” said the woman.Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant Kay Makhubele said the situation remained tense in the area."The roads are still closed. This morning‚ one person was arrested after he was found in possession of clothes from Pep. The store is among those looted overnight."So far‚ 11 people have been arrested‚ he said‚ adding five policemen were injured after they were stoned‚ Makhubele said.He said police would remain at the scene until the situation was calm...
