The  two, aged 21 and 26, who are related, claim they were suffocated with a plastic bag, assaulted with handcuffs which "pinched their manhood", and beaten, following their arrest last Monday.

The 19-year-old's half naked body was found in a communal toilet two weeks ago.

Thabo Nogemane, for the accused, told Magistrate Xolani Menyiwe the alleged assault of his clients was a serious human rights issue. The accused showed the magistrate the injuries to their wrists, which were apparently due to being handcuffed unnecessarily tightly.

Menyiwe ordered that the two be kept in Pollsmoor prison’s hospital section while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate investigated the matter.

The State maintained that although the two had no prior convictions or outstanding cases, it would oppose bail.

Bail proceedings would continue on April 20.

Irate community members sang songs calling for justice outside the court.

Deputy Police Minister Maggie Sotyu recently criticised police for their handling of the case. Officers reportedly only contacted the family for statements when she raised concerns about the lack of attention the murder was getting.
