Start of Cape Town’s holiday crime clampdown ‘delivers desired results’
Fines to the value of almost R100,000 were handed out during Operation Paseka‚ which wrapped up in the Cape Town CBD in the early hours of Friday morning.South African Police Service spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut said the activity which had a “special emphasis on the Long Street night life delivered the desired results”.“Our endeavours to maintain law and order resulted in 27 vehicles and 37 persons searched at random roadblocks‚” said Traut.“Fines to the tune of R97 500 were issued for a total of 184 offences at these roadblocks.”Arrests were made for robbery‚ possession of drugs‚ dealing in drugs‚ possession of counterfeit money and driving under the influence of alcohol.“Two suspects who were wanted for theft and assault were also arrested‚” added Traut.“The SAPS will deploy operational members in high numbers during the long weekend and conduct various crime fighting initiatives to ensure a peaceful holiday period.”..
