Lawyers have accused the South African Police Service of not providing adequate resources to investigate the murder of mining activist Sikhosiphi “Bazooka” Rhadebe. The Legal Resources Centre along with Richard Spoor Attorneys Inc. who are representing Rhadebe’s family said in a statement that there were “multiple incidences” where investigators could not perform their duties because of transport issues."We do not believe that the SAPS is providing adequate resources to the investigation‚" the lawyers said. The former chairperson of the Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC) was murdered last week in an apparent assassination by unknown assailants. The ACC is opposing mining of the mineral sands near Xolobeni on the Wild Coast by an Australian company.“They have not had any visible forensic capacity at the processing of the body or at the crime scene‚” the lawyers said. The lawyers also said that they had been hampered by the Mzamba Police Station with regards to having an independent forensic pathologist as part of the post-mortem examination which was a right of the family. The lawyers also accused the Hawks of failing to meet an agreement to have an independent expert inspect the crime scene along with them. The vehicle that was hijacked and used during the murder was also released to its owner without the Hawks having inspected it.Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said that while the Hawks only took over the case on March 29‚ he pointed out that it was unethical for them to conduct the investigations in partnership.Mulaudzi said that a multidisciplinary task team comprising members from the Hawks’ Eastern Cape Provincial office‚ Mbizana Hawks‚ and the Mzamba detectives were set up to investigate the case.“We ask Richard Spoor Attorneys to respect our position by allowing us to do our work by not interfering with this investigation‚” Mulaudzi said.Mulaudzi said that an investigator had visited the Port Shepstone pound on Wednesday where the white VW Polo which was used for transport by the three suspects was kept.He added that the investigators would collect intelligence and evidence relating to the vehicle and also locate the owners of the vehicle in order to inspect it.“The claim that this investigating team has not been provided with adequate support and resources to do their job is misleading‚” Mulaudzi said.LRC and Richard Spoor Attorneys said that they would be drafting a report regarding their independent investigators’ findings to assist the relevant authorities in their investigation...
