Gang flees with money after blowing up ATM at filling station in Soweto

A gang of heavily armed men fled with an undisclosed amount of money after they blew up an ATM in Soweto.The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday at a filling station in Zola‚ Soweto.Police officers who responded to the scene‚ were also fired at by the gang but no injuries were sustained‚ police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said.Investigating Mdluli would have been ‘career suicide’‚ former cop tells courtThe gang was armed with pistols and assault rifles when they entered the filling station and ordered petrol attendants to lie on the ground‚ according to a petrol attendant.The man said his colleagues who were working at the time‚ told him that the armed men ordered them to lie on the ground at gunpoint and some of his colleagues tried to flee and were cornered and brought back to the filling station.The men then headed to the ATM situated outside the shop. They placed explosives which blew the ATM to pieces.Two vehicles‚ an old Toyota Corolla and minibus taxi which were parked close to the ATM‚ were damaged when the machine exploded.Makhubela said officers from Jabulani police station and the flying squad unit were responding to the bombing when the gang opened fire on them‚ leaving one police vehicle riddled with bullet holes.“Luckily‚ no injuries were sustained by our members including employees at the filling station. We are investigating cases of attempted murder‚ malicious damage to property and ATM bombing‚” Makhubela said.Police have appealed to anyone with information to assist them with their investigations...
