Colleagues at the Western Cape restaurant at which the 24-year-old Zimbabwean worked were puzzled by his new-found wealth.

However, the pieces fell into place this week when the Hawks arrested Chirume and he was charged in the Grabouw Magistrate's Court with the unauthorised possession of a point-of-sale device.

The Hawks said the state-of-the-art skimming device had been used to capture restaurant customers' card details and PINs since April.

Chirume had allegedly used them to fraudulently rake in more than R100,000.

The device collected information even when other waiters were using it, producing slips with error messages after PINs were entered. - Aron Hyman
