Municipalities’ spending on staff surges to R73bn

Municipalities' employee-related costs grew by 43.9% between 2011 and 2015‚ or from R50 billion in 2011 to R73 billion in 2015. This was revealed in the Statistics SA financial census of municipalities in Pretoria on Wednesday. Employee-related costs contributed to just over a quarter of municipalities’ total operating expenditure in the financial year ended in June 2015‚ according to Statistics SA.
