Metrobus strike ends - services to resume on Wednesday
Johannesburg Metrobus drivers are expected back at work on Wednesday morning after the union and the bus company reached an agreement. Speaking to TMG Digital‚ City of Joburg spokesperson Virgil James said bus services in the city would resume after an offer was made to bus drivers to be trained to become inspectors – alongside the private company that has been contracted. "The strike is officially over because the unions agreed to accept Metrobus' offer to train relevant bus drivers within the period of the contract of the private company‚" said James. The company - Tick Tech – over which drivers were striking because of it being contracted to render inspection services‚ has signed a one year contract with Metrobus which came into effect as of July 1 2016 and is expected to end on June 30 2017."Drivers will be afforded an opportunity to get training within this [one year] period which is good news."On the other hand‚ it then means that they must resume duties by tomorrow morning and we expect that we should be in full operation by Thursday morning‚" added James. The three day Metrobus strike‚ left thousands of commuters stranded as services were suspended on over 200 routes. On Monday‚ drivers told TMG Digital that they were unhappy that the bus company had contracted the services to a private company to carry out inspections.James said the new company has been given a strict mandate by Metrobus to "close existing gaps and to be more prudent in the way they will be managing the work".He also added that Metrobus managing director Mavela Dlamini was not impressed by the manner in which the previous company had carried out their duties.Efforts to get hold of South African Municipal Workers Union shop-stewards were unsuccessful...
