#FeesMustFall protests shut UKZN campus

University of KwaZulu-Natal management suspended all academic activity on their Pietermaritzburg campus on Monday due to protests over the payment of fees. Vice-Chancellor and Principal‚ Dr Albert van Jaarsveld‚ said there were protests overnight and early on Monday. “The campus was not fully accessible to University staff and students and classes were disrupted‚” he said in a statement.“University Management deliberated on the situation this morning and took a decision to suspend all academic activities on the Pietermaritzburg Campus today‚ 15 August 2016 and tomorrow‚ 16 August 2016.“The University regrets the inconvenience caused and apologises to all students whose commitments have been interrupted by the unfortunate events‚” he said.Police‚ University Risk Management Services and the Public Order Policing units would monitor the situation on campus.The University Council had not deliberated on issues relating to fee increments‚ he said‚ as it was awaiting a directive from the Department of Higher Education and Training.“In a nutshell‚ no decision on fee increments have been made. We will endeavour to ensure the safety and security of all staff and students at all times.”He warned students who engaged in illegal activities or acted outside procedures for raising grievances that their actions “will not be tolerated” ...
