Traffic cops stopped 200 vehicles staging an illegal drag race along a public road‚ the City of Cape Town said on Monday.
The vehicles‚ which had gathered on Sunday in Robert Sobukwe Road‚ Bellville South‚ included 14 that were unroadworthy‚ said JP Smith‚ the mayoral committee member for safety and security.
In another incident‚ two trucks involved in illegally dumping builders' rubble in Philippi were the first to be impounded under the city's amended waste management bylaw.
Their owners will have to pay R7‚500 to get each of them back.
The trucks drove away after law enforcement officers approached but they were pulled over and one of the drivers was fined for not having a licence.
"These vehicles will not be released unless their cases have been concluded in court and the impoundment fees have been paid‚" said Smith.
