Protesting Durban University of Technology (DUT) students blockaded a busy road outside a hotel in Overport on Wednesday afternoon‚ calling for Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande. About 300 students‚ some carrying placards demanding free education‚ caused traffic gridlock on the busy Peter Mokaba Road near the Coastlands Hotel.Students surrounded the entrance and exit of the hotel - at which DUT management and education officials were said to be meeting with protesting students. On Tuesday‚ riot police monitored the protesting students at the Steve Biko campus‚ and followed them to a residence in the CBD. While outside the residence‚ the students repeated earlier calls to "moer" SAPS officers and guards from private security company Mi7‚ complaining that they were "following us" and that they were being heavy-handed.Moments later‚ as students moved from the residence to the university's ML Sultan campus‚ they started hurling broken bricks‚ stones and rocks at police. Police retaliated‚ firing stun grenades towards the students‚ who scattered onto other campuses.DUT management suspended lecturers and assessments on Tuesday and Wednesday after student protests at the various campuses.Student Representative Council (SRC) president Zama Mncube said one of their main concerns related to National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) involving about 4000 students.A meeting was planned for Wednesday with the NSFAS CEO and a department of higher education ministerial delegation.Mncube said they felt the government was hell-bent on dividing students as universities would find a loophole to increase fees "stratospherically"."We want clarity‚ resolution‚ a way forward and assurances on all these issues. Students won't take things lying down‚" she said.In a communique to students issued on Sunday‚ interim vice chancellor and principal Dr John Volmink said that following a "productive meeting" with the SRC last week with regard to the NSFAS issue‚ a meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday with the NSFAS CEO as well as senior officials from the Department of Higher Education and Training and the SRC.- TMG Digital..
