Management of the University of Cape Town wants the academic programme to resume on Monday in order to be able to complete the year’s plans for 2016. UCT vice chancellor Max Price warned that the academic programme for this year would suffer severely if classes did not resume on Monday.“If we cannot reopen on [3 October] we will need to start having exams on weekends; we will lose some study days and if it goes beyond a week or so‚ we will not be able to complete the academic year in 2016‚” Price told EWN. But the student representative council at UCT warned that the security presence which had been brought in during the protests would cause problems. SRC president Rorisang Moseli urged students to avoid coming to campus until the security measures have been removed to avoid violent clashes.“We are aware of a joint group of students who have made it quite clear that they are going to be countering the security presence and if we have learned anything from the events that happened across the country‚ we would hate for our students to be put in that situation‚” said Moseli.Over the past two weeks students have been protesting at various higher education institutions including UCT.This followed an announcement by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande that fees at universities would only rise by up to 8%.
