Protest students democrats only when it suits them

South Africans love democracy. We proved it in 1994 when we voted to replace the tyranny of apartheid and we proved it again in August when we staged overwhelmingly peaceful local government elections despite rising political tensions and violence in the run-up. On Thursday last week Wits University, which has been at the centre of tumultuous protests in support of fee-free education, staged an election of its own with an online and text message poll of students.
