The City of Johannesburg has issued over 182 fines to users who are not adhering to water restrictions while the country struggles with low dam levels due to drought.

"Since 5 September 2016 a total of 139 notices and 182 fines have been issued to those not adhering to the level-2 water restrictions‚ as required by section 44 (3) of the water services by-law‚" MMC for Environmental and Infrastructure Services Department Anthony Still said.

  •

The penalty is a R1‚000 flat fine.

Still told reporters at a press briefing held at the Johannesburg Water head office that it has not been easy to get residents to pay their fines as officials are not law makers.

The cities of Tshwane‚ Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni are enforcing water restrictions and penalties.

The newly introduced water throttling system is the reduction on the inflow of water into a supply area. The city said it will be implementing this to all areas in Johannesburg until water supply is stable enough to avoid level-3 water restrictions.
