KwaZulu-Natal’s beaches are safe and ready for an influx of holiday-makers‚ the provincial government said on Tuesday.

Economic development‚ tourism and environmental affairs MEC Sihle Zikalala said: "Every year‚ during the December and January holiday period‚ KwaZulu-Natal hosts thousands of holiday-makers keen to take advantage of its mild weather and immaculate beaches.

“While we a have kaleidoscope of tourism offerings‚ research has shown that the beach is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s strongest selling points. We pulled out all the stops to ensure the safety of our holiday makers.”

Zikalala said that the shark nets‚ which he will inspect on Wednesday morning with the KZN Sharks Board‚ was one of the reasons for his confidence.

“Since the installations of shark nets‚ the numbers of shark attacks in the province have reduced to less than one incident per annum‚" he said.
