A freak wave hit and seriously injured a 75-year-old bather on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.

The man was injured in the surf at Umzumbe beach.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the man‚ aged 75‚ was in the surf when he was hit by a freak wave. Paramedics arrived… and found that the lifeguards‚ and some members of the public [had] managed to pull the man from the surf and immobilise him on a trauma board‚” said a statement by Netcare911.

“The Advanced Life Support paramedic from Netcare stabilised the patient before they transported him to a hospital in Port Shepstone for further care.”

The man was reported to have serious injuries.
