eToll problem tossed back to national government

Gauteng Premier David Makhura has admitted that the provincial government has not been able to come to any concrete resolution on eTolls.

Makhura said on Monday his advisory panel had not made any progress in resolving the resistance of Gauteng motorists towards eTolls.

"We have tried our best. The ultimate solution can only come from national level. We will continue to engage in order to represent the interests of our residents‚" said Makhura. The premier said the province had learned its lesson with the failure of eTolls and is mobilizing resources for public transport infrastructure.

"We will ensure that we don’t commit the same mistakes done with the eTolls. We can’t build roads and only later inform citizens that they must pay. In fact‚ there will no eTolls on our new roads."
