Police divers recovered the body of a man, believed to be Roger Solik, 66, from a river in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands yesterday.

The bloodied body of Solik's wife, Christine, 57, was found higher upstream in the river at Nzinga, near Impendle, in the Drakensberg area, on Friday.

The couple appear to have been murdered by men who broke into their house. Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said: "[The man's] hands were tied behind his back."

A massive search for Roger Solik, involving the police, private investigators, security companies and the community had been under way since Christine Solik's body was found 70km from the couple's home at The Bend Country Estate in Nottingham Road.

The house had been trashed and bloodstains were found.

The Solik family said: "Roger has fought hard against Parkinson's disease for 20 years. Daily medication is essential for his condition and, no matter how mentally fit he was, without his medication he would have become totally dysfunctional within 48 hours."

The family said they were told by the police on Friday of a robbery at the house and later of the discovery of their mother's body.

"Our parents were inseparable and their relationship was something to aspire to," they said.

Zwane said worried neighbours found that the Solik house had been trashed and bloodstains were evident.

He said a passer-by saw Christine's body in the river at Nzinga .

"Her hands and legs were tied with wire. She also sustained an injury to the head. A case of murder has been opened.

"A vehicle taken during the house robbery in Nottingham Road was found abandoned in the KwaMadlala area in Taylors Halt."
