It is better late than never for nearly 1 000 “homeless” Durban University of Technology (DUT) students who now have accommodation several weeks into the first quarter of the year.
Amar Singh‚ dean of students at DUT‚ said the solution was found after lengthy negotiations with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NFSAS).
“963 students have been approved for stay in private accommodation through a cash allowance that will be made available to students for payment to landlords‚” Singh said. “This decision was taken in the best interest of our students‚ so that … those students can now focus on their studies.
He added that the allowance is exclusive to the students who had not been allocated permanent residence in 2017.
“We are very grateful to our SRC‚ who worked intimately with the university‚ to help ensure that we have a viable solution from NSFAS to assist the affected students‚" he said.
