Police and security personnel are leading a desperate search for a group of preschool children‚ purportedly abducted by gunmen in the wake of a cash-in-transit heist in Pinetown‚ west of Durban‚ on Friday morning.

The heist claimed the life of a security guard and left another critically wounded.

It is understood that guards from SBV had been confronted by gunmen after stopping their armoured car. In a shootout that followed‚ two guards were gunned down.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that one man had been shot in the head and had died at the scene. He said that the other guard‚ who had been shot in the face and legs‚ was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Two police sources‚ who spoke to TMG Digital on condition of anonymity‚ said that the gunmen had fled the scene before dumping their getaway car outside a creche in Short Street.

They then hijacked a car and a white Toyota Quantum mini bus.

They said that initial reports from the scene suggested that several children and the driver had been in the bus and remain missing.

This is a developing story.
