A 35-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the murder of five-year-old Minentle Lekhatha‚ said Western Cape police.

“He was arrested on a charge of murder and is expected to make a court appearance in Strand on Thursday 8 June 2017‚” said Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut.

Lekhata’s murder rocked the small community of Lwandle in Somerset West.

Her body was found by a passerby under a bridge on Sunday‚ a short distance away from her home.

This was a day after the Grade R pupil had disappeared from outside her home where she was last seen playing alone.

It was not immediately clear whether Lekhatha knew her alleged killer.

“Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case is yet to be finalised and the finer aspects of the suspect’s apprehension cannot be disclosed at this stage‚” said Traut.
