Education department officials in the Western Cape will meet at 9am on Tuesday to discuss what is expected to be the biggest storm to hit the area in 30 years.

Children in certain areas might be advised to stay home.

Jessica Shelver‚ spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schaffer‚ said they will discuss the severity of the storm and what steps should be taken to ensure the safety of children.

An announcement will be made later in the day.

Meanwhile James-Brent Styan - spokesman for the MEC of Local Government Anton Bredell - said there was no way of accurately predicting the severity of the storm‚ but experts had warned that things look grim.

"Our experts have said that it is the worst patterns seen in 30 years‚'' said Styan.

Cape Town mayoral committee member JP Smith said they will activate the Disaster Operations Centre on Tuesday morning due to the "severity of the anticipated weather conditions''.
