That's according to the Department of Agriculture‚ Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) after a circulating whatsapp got local residents in a panic over suspected bird flu outbreaks in KZN.

This comes in the wake of Avian influenza outbreaks in Mpumalanga and the Free State‚ which has seen Zimbabwe impose a ban on chicken imports from the country.

The message that sparked the panic read: "Kzn chicken has bird flu. Its not safe to buy chicken - 90000 of chicken is contaminated. Please do not purchase any chicken. Please send to family and friends urgently."

It attributes the source to a local radio station.

However‚ DAFF spokesman Bomikazi Molapo said: "There is no truth to any of this. I just checked with provincial vets in KZN as well."
