A 70-year-old woman was beaten to death on a farm on the outskirts of Tongaat on Wednesday night.

Her husband‚ also badly beaten‚ had lain bound just metres away from the body of his wife for several hours.

It is understood that the husband had returned home from a day at the market when three men‚ armed with knives‚ had forced their way into his home.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said that once inside‚ the men had locked the door and tied the couple up.

“They tied his hands and legs and threw him on the floor. They also tied his wife’s hands at the back of her and gagged her mouth‚” he said.

“They left her to die in the bedroom and then ransacked his entire house. This morning (Thursday) the owner managed to get up with his hands tied and screamed for help‚” Zwane added.

He said that the man’s screams had grabbed the attention of a worker who went to call for help. The man was rushed to hospital by ambulance for further urgent treatment.

Zwane said that a case of murder and house robbery had been registered and that no arrests had been made.
