Eight KwaMashu teenagers have found themselves on the wrong side of the law – arrested four months after the theft of four laptops and 25 tablets from their own school.

The scholars were arrested on Wednesday after a police raid‚ according to spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala. She said that the eight had been linked to the burglary at Zeph Dlomo High School in Durban on December 17.

“The [police] members managed to arrest a total of eight suspects‚ aged between 16 and 18 years old‚ who were charged for business robbery. Some of the arrested suspects are the learners from the same school‚” she said.

“Seven of the arrested suspects were released into the custody of their parents and warned to appear in court next week. The eighth remains in custody and will appear in court on Friday‚” she added.

KZN police commissioner Major General Bheki Langa commended his officers and called on the school community to be vigilant.

“I appeal to the community to continue working with the police in the fight against crime by providing valuable information to the police. They must be ears and eyes of the police and protect their local schools from criminals who break and vandalized the schools‚” he said.
