It was no scam – here are some of the lucky FlySafair R4 ticket winners

A mother of two could not believe her luck when she scored herself five FlySafair return tickets to Cape Town for just under R60.

The 34-year-old Kellie de Sa can now take her family to see some of relatives in Cape Town in September‚ thanks to FlySafair’s R4 birthday ticket sale which her sister-in-law told her about on Wednesday.

To celebrate its fourth birthday‚ the airline made 30‚000 one-way tickets available for just R4 each.

De Sa paid R39 for four return tickets and R15 for an extra return ticket for her nephew. With VAT and confirmation costs‚ the total for the five tickets came to just under R60.

“Looks like a lot of people did not get it but I was one of the lucky people. It’s such a discount because we can’t afford the normal tickets. I’m so happy‚” said De Sa.

As the anxiety and desperation mounted‚ she said she had logged in with multiple devices. “The laptop was slow so I used my phone instead. It’s my phone that got me the tickets.”

Viwe Vee Cakata was also thrilled to be one of the lucky ones to score tickets‚ sharing a video on Facebook‚ captioned: “Today started off really well for me - visiting my sister for my birthday next month‚ with my whole family. And I paid only R70 for our tickets.”

FlySafair said that the 30‚000 tickets‚ which went on sale from 9am on Thursday‚ were sold out just after 12pm.

On Facebook the airline dismissed claims that the contest was a scam or a marketing rip-off.

“An airline wouldn't make a profit with R4 tickets‚ so we don't. Our aim with sales such as these is not to make a profit‚ but it is to create awareness regarding our brand. The way we look at it is that we could either spend millions of rand on a television ad or we could let ordinary South Africans sample our product and we choose to let people sample our product.” FlySafair clarified in response to one user.

While this is the case‚ there are those who were not so lucky even though they had been on the waiting list since 9am.

Twitter users were disgruntled at the fact that they did not win themselves free tickets.
