The police suspect that the two bodies discovered in a cave at Hennops River Valley‚ west of Pretoria‚ are those of Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members who had gone there to pray.
"We suspect the dead bodies are those of two men who were reported missing around April 24. It is believed they came here to pray‚" said police spokesperson Mapula Rikhotso.
She said the police were investigating the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The bodies were badly decomposed‚ Rikhotso said.
When TimesLIVE arrived at the scene‚ police and members of the local criminal record centre were waiting to be taken into the cave to retrieve the bodies.
The team were escorted to the cave‚ which is about 100m from the main road.
There was a strong stench coming from the cave and flies could be seen hovering around the entrance.
The cave is one of at least three the police were reportedly searching.
“Based on information we have‚ we strongly believe that there are more bodies in this cave system‚” said an officer.
He said they had received reports that other members of the ZCC had also disappeared.
