Five suspected hijackers were arrested following a shootout in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Police opened fire on one of the two hijacked vehicles after a suspect pointed a firearm at officers during a car chase that began in Steenberg. The chase ended with the alleged robbers crashing in Grassy Park on the corner of the M5 and 5th avenue.

One of the suspects was shot and wounded by police.

Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana said national intervention unit officers arrested the injured man and four others aged between 24 and 36.

“They are facing charges of possession of hijacked vehicle‚ illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. An attempted murder case was also opened for investigation. Detectives are on the scene‚” she said.

“Once charged the suspects will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.”
