The eThekwini Metro Police have urged people to use fireworks responsibly ahead of Diwali festivities this week.
Metro police spokesman Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said that although they encouraged all citizens of the municipality to embrace and celebrate the cultural significance of Diwali‚ it needed to be done in a respectful and considerate manner.
“We urge everyone celebrating Diwali to light up the fireworks only at the appropriate time and not to use loud fireworks that traumatise our four-legged friends‚” said Sewpersad.
The Festival of Lights is celebrated as a symbol of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil – or light over darkness - and is expected to be celebrated by millions of Hindus from Tuesday.
Firework displays can only be held from 7pm to 10pm.
Swepersad also said that people needed to be mindful of the Explosives Act‚ which states that fireworks are to be discharged by qualified pyrotechnicians‚ and that residents are only permitted to use ordinary store-bought fireworks.
Sewpersad also warned that those using fireworks illegally in public could incur a fine of up to R1‚500.
He also urged pet owners to consider sedating their pets during the festivities.
"Those who have pets may want to consider getting a tranquiliser for them‚" he said.
