Twitter reacts to bill entitling working dads to 10 days' leave after birth of a child
On Friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Labour Laws Amendment Bill, effectively giving fathers 10 days paid leave after the birth of a child, but Twitter still wants more.
TimesLIVE reported that the bill caters for parents who were previously not covered for maternity leave. It also extends to adoptive parents when an adoption order is granted.
This is a huge win for fathers who were previously not entitled to maternity leave.
The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has for a long time been at the forefront of the mission to secure parental leave for adoptive and surrogate parents as well as same-sex couples.
Last year, the National Assembly passed the bill and up until Friday, the only thing outstanding was the president's signature.
After Hendri Terblanche petitioned parliament to allow men time off work to help care for their newborns, ACDP MP Cheryllyn Dudley used Terblanche's petition to propose the bill.
"This is an achievement that every South African can be proud of," said Terblanche.
The news was largely welcomed on social media but other people were not so sure that 10 days was enough, considering that female employees are entitled to four months maternity leave.
Some just wanted clarity on exactly how this law would be implemented:
Is this 10 working days? Because I know some companies have to even count Saturday and Sunday on your leave days https://t.co/vUu0ar7nJ0

10 Days? I'm confused, I thought paternity leave was at least a month.

How is 10 days enough to bond with a newborn and help a new mother?
This really doesn't make any sense... https://t.co/ZaAXXqpq8U
A small step for man, and a minuscule step for mankind. Why not let the 4 Month maternity leave be shared by the parents?
