A cyclist was attacked and stabbed while on a morning ride on the M4 Ruth First Highway in Durban North early on Thursday.

Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson said the elderly man had been travelling over the Umgeni River Bridge when he was confronted by a knife-wielding man.

In the struggle that ensued, the man was stabbed and assaulted.

“Paramedics attended to the scene and found the injured man at the roadside. He was treated by paramedics at the scene but opted to take himself to hospital rather than be transported by ambulance,” he said.

Jamieson warned cyclists to exercise caution in the area and advised them to ride in groups to ensure their safety.
