Meet Lucky, the blind kitten from Khayelitsha that got a second chance

A tiny ginger kitten, who had a severe blunt force head injury, got a second chance at life after being handed over to the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha just over a month ago.

Head veterinarian, Dr Friedl le Roux, believes the kitten was hit on the head or dropped from a height. Barely able to walk, the kitten would have seizures every 20 minutes and when he did get up, he would walk around in circles, unable to control the tremors hitting his body.

With a slim chance of survival, a dedicated volunteer was assigned to take the kitten home so it could get 24 hour care.

"Every hour and a half I fed him, gave him medication and made sure he was warm. I set my alarm to wake me through the night. I was exhausted, but the kitten was still alive and that was all that mattered," said volunteer Stefanie Bergmann.

After four days, the seizures subsided but it was clear the kitten was blind as a result of the injury.

Staff named the kitten Lucky and he will join three other blind cats in a loving home.
