A pedestrian on his way to catch a taxi in Johannesburg was held at gunpoint and robbed of his Carvela shoes.

Police said the 30-year-old victim was pounced on at the corner of Jeppe and Goud streets.

"He was on his way to catch a taxi when he was confronted by two suspects. One of them pointed a firearm and took his Carvela shoes and R500 cash," said police spokesperson Capt Xoli Mbele. The robbery took place on Friday.

"They instructed him to run away. He saw police busy with their routine crime-prevention duties and alerted them."

Police managed to arrest the alleged robbers, aged 24 and 26, and recovered the pair of shoes and cash.

The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

The handmade Italian shoes, that could cost upwards of R2000 per pair, are a well-known and sought-after brand in South Africa.
