CCTV 'hijacker' who kidnapped Durban woman will remain behind bars

A man accused of having a hand in the hijacking and abduction of businesswoman Marta Rubilar has been remanded in custody after his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

Asibonge Mdlalose, 28, faces charges of kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Barefoot and in a threadbare white T-shirt, he stood downcast in the dock.

Rubilar, 54 , was hijacked and kidnapped by a gang of men outside her place of work in Powell Road, Morningside, on Friday.

CCTV footage of her snatching - which showed her being bundled into her own car by a group of men who had lain in wait for her - went viral.

She was found several hours later unharmed in Newlands West by police officers who were on patrol. Her car was found abandoned in KwaMashu. 

Mdlalose's alleged accomplices remain at large.

He is scheduled to take part in an identification parade while in custody and is expected back in court on December 18.
