Why ‘uncle’ Amon now hopes to graduate from ‘doctor’ to ‘dad’

Image: Supplied Dr Amon Mwiine of Uganda received his PhD in sociology this week at Stellenbosch University, after almost three years away from his family.
The fear of failing his small children after being away from them for almost three years kept a Ugandan researcher and doctoral graduate on his toes.
But it is painful, says Amon Mwiine, when his two-year-old son Aaron – whom he had last seen as a newborn – refers to him as ‘uncle’ and not dad.
However, his sacrifice has paid off, and he has been awarded his PhD in sociology from Stellenbosch University.
