A female Johannesburg metro (JMPD) police officer is in a stable condition at Milpark hospital after being shot when her colleagues tried to stop a fleeing motorist.

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the officer was shot on Smit Street in Braamfontein on Wednesday.

"A white BMW which was being chased by other officers for avoiding a roadblock in Doornfontein was approaching a second roadblock on Smit Street," said Minnaar.

"The female officer was shot as officers tried to stop the BMW."

It was not immediately clear if the shot was fired by officers or the occupants of the car.

Minnaar said law enforcement authorities are still searching for the white BMW.
